About Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre

In addition to treating over one million patients each year, Sunnybrook also employs over 200 researchers and spends more than $100 million in medical research every year. Even though the hospital has grown from serving veterans to the rest of the community, it still uses nearly half of its beds for long-term care and veteran patients. Sunnybrook is also a teaching hospital, immersing students in a variety of health care specialities.

Specialties

Sunnybrook is passionate about research and finding cures for the untreatable. For this reason, Sunnybrook has four strategic areas of focus:

  • Heart and Stroke patients
  • Many types of cancer
  • Trauma, emergency, and critical care
  • Women and babies

Education

As a proud academic health sciences centre, Sunnybrook hosts thousands of students each year to learn from their expert staff and physicians. Students learn through interpersonal education (when two or more professionals learn with and from each other to provide greater health outcomes).

Funding

Private donors have provided more than $36 million for many projects, including the expansion of the Schulich Heart Centre and Canadas most advanced maternity ward. Sunnybrook keeps a watchful eye on funds, ensuring every dollar is being put toward new facilities, breakthrough research, and for the acquisition of the most advanced equipment.

Affiliations

Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is affiliated and has partnered with many local, provincial, national, and international organizations. Perhaps the most influential affiliation is with the University of Toronto. Other partnerships include many local hospitals, Ontario Women’s Directorate, Health Canada, Kidney Foundation of Canada, and the Children’s Hospital of Fudan University in Shanghai.
