Exercise Your Way to a Healthier Heart | Qualicare Tri Cities
Heart disease is the second leading cause of death for both men and women in Canada. Although there are some heart disease risk factors (like increased age and family history of the condition) that cannot be changed, the lifestyle-related risk factors can be changed.
During Heart Month, our in-home care providers at Qualicare Tri-Cities want to offer you tips on how to reduce your risk of heart disease.
What’s Your Risk?
Let’s take a look at some of the most common risk factors associated with heart disease:
- Being overweight or obese
- Being physically inactive
- High blood pressure
- High blood cholesterol
You’ll notice that the factors listed above are all related to lifestyle habits. Healthy habits can help protect your heart and lower your risk.
Are You Getting Enough Exercise Each Day?
One key step you can take toward better health is exercising regularly. You know it’s important, but have you considered just how important it is?
The heart is a muscle, so like all other muscles, it needs to be worked regularly. Exercise helps get in that workout!
When exercising for a healthier heart, the key is to find something that keeps your body moving, including:
- Brisk walking
- Playing tennis
- Jumping rope
For optimal health, aim to get at least 30 minutes of physical activity on most days of the week. You don’t need to get it in all at once”break it up into smaller segments as needed! A 10-minute walk here and there will add up.
