Healthy eating is important at any age, but especially for our older population. Our in-home care providers at Qualicare - North York want to help you and your loved one in making the best food choices possible.
As we age, our bodies need the nutrients from foods to help move healthily from one stage of life to the next. While it can seem that making healthy food choices is tedious, it should be a priority when planning a dietary plan for your loved one.
Let’s look at some ways you can start making better food choices for optimal nutrition for you and your loved one at every stage of life.
First, hydration plays an important role in our overall health, no matter our age. However, as we age, we can tend to lose some of our thirst. Therefore, to make sure we don’t become dehydrated as we age, we need to make sure we are consuming plenty of water throughout the day.
However, water doesn’t have to be the only beverage consumed by your loved one. In fact, low-fat or fat-free milk or 100-percent juice can also help your loved one stay hydrated. Just try to limit beverages with lots of added sugars and salts.
Second, make your loved one a part of mealtime. It’s way more fun to eat with others than it is by yourself. Therefore, try to eat with loved ones at least twice a week, if not more. Also, expand your dinner table by having your loved one invite a friend or two, especially when you can’t make it for mealtime yourself.
Finally, planning is key. When you plan healthy meals, you eat healthy meals. Therefore, choose foods that are tasty, but that also meet the necessary nutritional requirements for healthy living.
