The Nutritional Needs of Older Adults
As we age, we’re at a higher risk of malnutrition. As a result, it is important that our elderly loved ones are given the proper nutrients at each meal in order to keep up their strength and physical health.
Let’s take a look at some ways you can improve the eating habits of your loved one:
First, you want to make sure you are providing a colorful plate at every meal. Not only will your loved one be more apt to eat the food because it looks beautiful and tasty, but fruits and vegetables tend to provide the most colorful plate options. That means you’re packing your loved one’s plate with plenty of nutrients.
Second, you want to make sure that your loved one is getting enough calcium on a daily basis. As we grow older, our risk for osteoporosis and falling increases. To better prevent those two conditions from occurring, you want to make sure you are building stronger bones. Calcium is able to do just that! Pair calcium with vitamin D for proper absorption.
Finally, you want to make sure your loved one is getting enough omega-3 fatty acids to help reduce inflammation. Inflammation is tied with a number of chronic health conditions, including heart disease and arthritis.
