Aging is inevitable. How you handle the aging process, though, can make all the difference.
Our team of in-home care providers at Qualicare want to offer some insight to men about the aging process and how to protect your health as you get older. Let’s talk specifically about heart health.
Take Care of Your Heart
Heart disease is the second leading cause of death among Canadians. Therefore, it is important for men to take care of their hearts as they age so that they can increase their chances of living a long, healthy life.
Let’s take a look at some ways you can improve your heart health while aging:
Did You Exercise Today?
No matter how old you are, it is important to add physical activity into your daily routine. Whether it is going for a walk, swimming or even doing tai chi, it is important to get moving for at least 30 minutes a day. You want to choose an activity that gets your heart pumping!
Plus, exercise can help you maintain a healthy weight, which leads to a lower risk of heart disease.
What Did You Eat Today?
Every day, you have choices about what you’re going to eat. So fill your plate up with heart-healthy essentials more often than not.
You want to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, lean protein sources such as fish or chicken, whole grains, and low-fat dairy. Limit your consumption of added sugars, excess sodium and saturated fat.
How Well Are You Handling Stress?
If your personal and/or work stress is causing you to eat fast food, smoke a cigarette or follow other unhealthy habits, it is time to start learning how to better manage your stress with some helpful techniques.
While a small amount of stress is normal and can even be helpful, too much stress can hurt your heart and put you at a higher risk of health conditions like heart disease.
Meditation, exercise and/or therapy are wonderful tools you can use to better handle stress.
