Fun Activities for Seniors With Limited Mobility

As we grow older, we often experience at least some loss of mobility. This occurs for a variety of reasons, including chronic medical conditions, diminished balance and even certain medications.

However, that doesn’t mean that your loved one cannot have some fun this fall. Our in-home care providers at Qualicare want to offer activity ideas for you and your loved one that are suitable even for those with limited mobility.

Limited Mobility Does Not Equal Limited Life

So your loved one might not be able to get up and run a marathon with you. But, that doesn’t mean there are not other things you can do!

For instance, you could spend time with your loved one reading a book. Reading is a wonderful activity for everyone, but especially older adults.

Reading regularly can lead to:

  • Better sleep
  • Improved memory
  • Increased cognitive health
  • Reduced stress levels

Whether you read a book aloud together or sit quietly together reading your own individual books or magazines, it’s a meaningful activity. And when the days are beautiful outside, head out to the porch to read!

Second, you can also try out other hobbies together, including:

  • Baking
  • Crocheting
  • Cooking
  • Gardening
  • Knitting
  • Learning a new language
  • Playing an instrument

Remember, you are never too old to learn something new. Is there something your loved one always wanted to do but never got the chance? Now is the time!

Finally, it is important to ensure you are making exercise a part of every day—or at least most days of the week. And while your loved one’s mobility might be limited, that doesn’t exclude all types of exercise.

For instance, chair exercises and yoga routines are perfect workouts for those with diminished mobility, because they allow a person to remain in one place while moving the body.

As a bonus, physical activity has been shown to help maintain mobility and balance, so it can help ensure your loved one’s mobility doesn’t worsen.
